I had a new computer but it still too slow when I deal with posters in the size of 70x100 cm and 300 dpi pixle\inch
cpu:2800 MHz
1024 KBcash(double cash)
RAM:512 M.B.D.D.R
Mother board:Asuse P4 13 533-x
It is the best you can get around here but it still too slow with high resolution big posters that it needs 7 minutes to open them is this normal
please tell me what to do.
:o Thanks

I worked with bigger posters on my Athlon 2400 and sometimes Photoshop got slow as well. It depends on many things. I am not a hardware pro, so I would just recommend to keep your windows clean. Don't install too much stuff you are not going to use.

Thank you Sir for answering me as stubid as it may sound "what is athlon?" ok somebody told me that the windows xp pro may not identify double cash processer so I have to get Xp pro sevice pack 1 I will try this ... it may work but I think that the problem is also because I use too many layres with high resolution (300 dpi pixle\inch) what do you think????????????????????

You need to get Service Pack 1 - it is important for hardware issues, as well as security issues.

Photoshop will always run slow on large 300DPI files unless you have lots of RAM (at least 1GB). Also, please use a smaller font when posting next time.

7 minutes!? thats a bit long is it not ;)
i dont see any reason it should be that long, also can you give us any more details about what type of cpu/ram you have and if you are doing 3d work it could depend on your graphics card also?

its "cache" and yea you should definately have sp1 installed. infact you should have it before you even install your drivers

try to get rid of almost all your running processes....i would also probably reformat or atleast uninstall and stop processes from starting up at start-up...also defragment your hard-drive...and update windows

ahem....the only way to really have 300dpi files run fast is to work on a mac. Sorry but it is true. I love pc's and do most of my work on one but any large formats I just use my buddies mac.

just wondering, u got anything to back that up? not having a go but

i dont see how simply using a 'mac' is going to make everything run faster. it all depends on your system and specs etc.
to me it seems using a mac is a bit cliche'd

- What kind of chipset do you have?
- Did you install the proper drivers for it? (via4in1 for via chipset/nforce for nforcechipset and so on, this could even speed-up your system by 60%).
- What CAS latecy settings do you use on your memory.
- What brand memory do you have.
- What temperature does your cpu get? And case? (some mainboards throttle back speed).
- What videocard drivers?
- What OS? And what Updates/tools do you have running?
- Did you check spy/adware? Trojans/virusses? Unwanted tools in the back?
- Etc..

Form your small descrition all i can suggest is to buy more memory and clean up your system. 1024MB is the least you should have, especially if running a heavy OS and a heavy scanner.

Sorry i have both, and my pc kicks my macs ass anytime, with any application, ESPECIALLY with 3D apps/design, Video-edit/SpecialEffects and games, video/dvd playback.

You could wonder why in EVERY important benchmark tool there is no sign from Macs at all. In fact the only benchmarks Macs are performing well in are benchmarks created, developped and published by Apple.

It's simply true that Macintosh can't win the speedwar with the current pc chipsets and cpu's. Amd & Intel aren't killing eachother for nothing. All they have for now is theire design, but with the 1000's of new pcdesign companies rising all over the planet that would be soon history as well. The Apple Cinema Display owns though, can't beat an Eizo but it's closer than most pc screens.

I wasn't saying that mac's are faster overall, i'm saying they're faster in photoshop with large files.

Oh dear God how can I answer all these questions you seem like professional in the hardware I have to check with the engineer responsible for my computer to know the answers thank you for caring to answer and I will try to get all the answers.

Iam far from a professional, i just used to be intrested in hardware and i build computers for myself and friends, but that's about it.

jtweddings >
Okay then i misunderstood you. I don't know if Macs are faster with photoshop, i think it's no longer the case anymore since all different pc brands are having a technology war for a few years now, which is good for the customer, caused by the bad economy. But i'll take your word for it.
I have something positive to say about Mac as well. Theire OS is mutch better and the system is mutch more easy to configure and maintain. Windows is so easy to crap up and so people do. I always get called by friends/family if theire computer is crashing again, or is slower than ever and you won't believe the mess i see everytime. Usually it's such a mess that i just reinstall everything one by one starting with the OS. With MacUsers i never had that. Macs stay as fast as they are all along. For them a Mac would be the best choise. (or unix on a pc) :D

I like both pc & mac btw, but in most cases i prefer the pc, but that's just my humble opinion.

but just because its a pc why should it be thought to be running windows os only.
i and a lot of people i know use *nix machines

also with the mac is faster in photoshop, do you mean if the computers were both at same spec? any evidence to back it up?
(just interested, still thinking if i should get a mac or not)

because you cant just say out of the blue, a mac is faster than a pc with large photoshop files

ive never seen a mac run faster than my desktop though, even new ones.

I wouldn't know but fact is that most people have Windows running instead of some unix clone or any other OS. Here are some percentages by nedstat:

1. Windows XP 80.3 %
2. Windows 98 12.3 %
3. Windows ME 3.0 %
4. Windows 2000 2.7 %
5. Mac OS 1.0 %
6. Windows 95 0.3 %
7. Windows 2003 0.3 %

I have a dualboot winXP & Debian Linux, you have all unix, maybe your friends as well, but you have to agree that it's not really regular and that's why i assumed the topicstarter is running some Windows version (see stats as well).

I would be intrested in that as well. I've found benchmarks proving the oppiside, but benchmarks aren't always reliable. And i can't make an honoust comparison between my pc and mac (dual 3,4 GHZ, 2GB 4200DDR, Radeon X800 Pro 256MB, AX800 PRO/TD vs an Apple dual 1.8 Ghz, 512Mb DDR400, GeForce FX 5200 Ultra). Altough the Mac speeds don't stretch very far anymore (dual 2,5 Ghz, 512kb cache) and for a pc i can still go for a 4x3600, 2048kb cache) and still i would save money buying the pc. I can even throw in extra raid scsi disks 15.000rpm vs Apple 7200rpm. And with some good watercooling & hsf combi i can even tweak the fsb, cpuclock, memspeed, videocard..

LOL i wonder how freedome feels after looking thru all this thread? Between "reformat your hard disk" or "if you dont have a V-10, 6 speed, 8 liters, Pirelly tires with Momo wheels and fueles with Shell V-Power you going anywhere" probably he left more confused than before.

Anyway, if the question is Photoshop related, lets help him fix it. A few months ago, on one of the regular Adobe Support emails, i found this: Optimize performance of Photoshop (Windows) There you will find a lot of tips that will help to improve your Photoshop speed.

From my previous experience (i was partner on a big-format company between 1996-2000) all i can say is that the key is keep the lowest number of layers as possible, have at least 2GB of empty space and no less than 512MB RAM (for a good performance).

And, about the never ending comparisons between Mac and PC, those days we were using both platforms with same results on productivity and in business, my friends, that is all about. ;)

I had the same problem when I first started. The computer I was using was a little dinky dell laptop. I decided to spend $3,000 to build a workstation (which was out of date a few seconds later) that could handle the whole creative suite and other software efficently and quickly. Memory is definately an issue. I only have 1GB (should have put 2 in) and photoshop runs fast. How is your computers cooling? That may also be an issue.

I think your photoshop tips could be very usefull for him. But what's wrong with exploring the system as whole? For example if you didn't install the via drivers it will cost you about 50%!! system performance in everything. And that's just one thing, and what about videodrivers add 80% if non installed and you're using 3d-apps or simular, or a 90C celcius processor could and most likely will throttle back to sometimes even 1/10th of it's actuall performance. What if the ram is running at cl-4 and the mainboard is using the setup fsb? Will be at least 25% of performance. Those are just 4 examples out of 1000's list. Iam trying to help him from the rooths. Cause his system should be able to run everything easily (more ram could solve everything at once though, cause large files are using a lot of ram).

Put in all the hardware you want, and use all the finest photoshop tweaks and tips, if your system insn't installed properly, if you didn't install the right drivers or didn't install some drivers at all or if you're running zillions of spy/adware in the background, or virussus, or active trojans, or.. or.. or.. or.. you'll never be able to work fast, not in photoshop and most importantly not in anything running on your pc.

Those tips comes from Adobe and i never said there was something wrong checking the system. At one point you must do it. Indeed, i always disabled and/or stop a lot of Windows Services running without purpose on the background. My point is that after reading the advices the feeling is similar as going to a doctor with a flu and then he said: "you need a surgery!"

Anyway, lets hear from Freedome how his doing.
