Ok - in 1.5 years I have already gone through 9 different designs for my website. Now its time for version 10. These are two concepts I have come up with:

http://www.penguinpedia.com/new1.gif
http://www.penguinpedia.com/new2.gif

Personally, I like the look of the first one. Keep in mind I am trying to attract potential clients, while at the same time creating something easy to update and something that is appealing. I also want to use photos of penguins each with little quotes underneath them (for the various pages).

Comments please on what you think I should go with :)

I'd have to say I like v2 better than v1. Its got a clean feel to it while v1 has the blue surrounding it, it kind of distracts you from all of the other content in my oppinion. I would go for v2 if it were me it attracted me a lot more than v1 so I would think the potiental clients would want to be looking at a clean page like v2 rather than something that might degrade the site a little bit, now if maybe you changed it to a light grey from the royal blue it would look a lot better, but personally, v2 is the winner for me, great job on both of them though :)

I also think that v1 has to small of a content area, maybe if that were larger I would like it a lot better, because its not that bad, thats the only thing that seems to push me away from that one and attract me to v2 because of the large content area in 2.

I like both designs, but I don't like the penguin. At first, I thought it looked like some guy with a hairy beer belly. Maybe the penguin should just be whiter or have more contrast.

Personally, I think it'd be a shame to do away with your current site design. It's purdy!

id have to agree with davidson, although #1 is nice, #2 has it beat, especially since the verticle navbar is harder to read.

to be honest, ( i know this isnt what you asked, but ) .. i like your current one more than any of those.
to me those two just say, basic or amateur because there is nothing different or abstract to it, and is a very common design which doesnt stand out.

dont confuse what im saying with simplicity, as i like the design you currently have because to me it says.
simplicity," i can do abstract and high quality graphic designs but i dont need to show you that. this is my portfolio site. this is what i see most portfolio sites like"

while those are kind of simple but in a low quality way.

sorry this is just my honest opinion, i think the site you have currently is ace and if you want to re-design you should make it even better

Thats quite alright ;) I have to agree myself anyways... I usually design something, get opinions and let it sit for a few days before I work with it. I don't like these anymore - and I have created something better along the lines of my current layout.

Thanks everyone.

Hi penguinpedia. I think your corrent design is the best. I think you need to add creative icons into your design. That will give a professional look.
Sorry for short comment, we all are busy :)

I like version 2. It makes me feel comfortable knowing the penguin has a head. Plus it helps your eye flow through the site top to bottom. Overall a really clean concept that gives a professional impression. I have been making over my site again for I lost count how many times. Increase the Peace.

i dislike the plain layouts...i need more going on...i think with both you miss "professional" and end up in "bland"
