Hello,

I am working on putting a portfolio together, but I have a slight dilemma, I don't have a whole lot of work to put into it. Nor do I have a great deal of web design knowledge.

Basically what I'm wondering is; Is it okay to use logos or work you've done for people even if they didn't use it? What if put a caption explaining it was not used?

Please check my portfolio out at http://danmadsen.tripod.com/ and let me know what you think. Thanks

-Dan

I do so, but I also use the caption "contest submittal" or "logo proposal" similar to what you suggest. IMHO, the artwork is still representative of your skill and capabilities, regardless of if it were used or not. That's what I do. Hopefully, one day, I can use all "accepted" designs to fill out a nice portfolio.

Hi Dan :) , about not having web design skills, don´t worry... there are a lot of graphic designers which have great print material, but don´t have a clue on web design. This is not a problem, you don´t need to know everything, as long as your portfolio is tidy and easy to navigate, you will be able to show your work ;) (which is the important thing) .
About using things that weren´t used by real customers... that is perfectly cool!, in fact, to get our first customers we all need to practice and get better, also, sometimes, you might have an idea for an illustration, or a logo in your head, and feel the need to create it, then I think you should, and add it to your portfolio too!, after all, that way you will be able to show people your style and at the same time get better and better with the constant practice. Hope this helps.

take care
