a quotation from a message I just received from a friend in Florida:
Actually, we're still on "the edge" around here. Hurricane Jeanne is still playing games with the entire east coast of the U.S.A. It moves north, then turns east, then south, and now is moving almost due west, festering about 600 miles off the coast of West Palm Beach moving in at about 6mph (11kmh). Everything is dependent upon a huge high pressure system over the central U.S.A. which is supposed to be moving southeast. This would steer the hurricane (just before striking south Florida) to the north and follow the coast or out to sea in a northeasterly direction which would perhaps start gales over Ireland and England after it is sheared of its tropical characteristics. HOWEVER, if the fuckin' high pressure system doesn't start moving soon, the hurricane will be forced to strike Florida somewhere between West
Palm Beach (about 40 miles north of where I am) and Melbourne (near Cape Canaveral where our space program resides, about 180 miles north of here) on SATURDAY OR SUNDAY.
