make a simple site and study the code that it makes for you. as you progress you might want to add more advanced things which might require you to stop on over at http://www.phpbuilder.net . they have a huge online community where you can post your questions on their forums
this is how i learned php at least. if it worked for me, it might for you

our next lesson..l
Try to stay awake when reading a PHP BOOK!
First, Have your computer or gaming console ready, prepare yourself for bordeom!
Get ready to read, eat something, use the bathroom, go outside the whole kaboozie.
Then!
Let's START! OPEN YOUR BOOK TO PAGE 1 !!! AFTER YOU READ THE FIRST PARAGRAPH, TAKE A BREAK!!!!
WOOOOHOOO!!!!

in my experience is it only gets boring when you can't test what your doing and can't find ways to use the things your learning...
I have a very short attention span yet (I'm 13 so you would expect that wouldn't you) if I can try to implement things I learn into what I'm doing for example I was learning about how to access the file system and built myself a file management system hosting companies provide...
all I have to say is test what your learning and incoroporate it into some project and that will make it much more interresting and in the end you'll be able to say I acheived this....
P.S. I my experience the for dummies series is pretty basic... Learning of tutorial sites is better...

Sorry, but, if it really is that bad, why the hell are you even trying? When I started learning PHP I actually wanted to learn, and didn't find it boring at all ...
Maybe you should find something else to do

Hmm.. yep.Originally posted by theFUZZYpickle
some of you might smack me for this, but start out with Dreamweaver.
Although, I'm not a visual programmer in the least, so I suppose that's why I like pure text editing.
Very true words. PHPBuilder is a great site for those who want to learn or those who need a little push. Their forums are full of great people (hell, I used to be one of them ) that will help you no matter how stupid your question may be.Originally posted by theFUZZYpickle
