Well my son is in the boy scouts and had his first ever Pinewood derby race then another Distric race about a month later.
This is his first car (wider one w/ flames) placed 1st among the wolf den and 2nd over all. (see black trophy to follow) LOL

The next race against about 50-70 participants. won 1st amongst the wolf den's in the area, Grand champion over all cub/boy scouts and General open punishing the 2yr reining champ. His cousin place 3rd w/ the skinny car and dad placed 2nd w/ the red and black car.

basically you start out with some rules and a kit that has a block of wood about 2" tall by 2" wide by 7" long, plastic wheels and axles (nails) you make your design and try to get it to weigh as close to 5oz as possible. His first car was 4.95oz and the second one was 4.989oz.
when you race the cars are places on a hill type of thing and let go first one crosses the finish line wins. 1st place out of 3 races moves on to the final, then to the grand champion race.
some pics.

oh the last pic isnt the finish line it's about 4-5 feet from that. that is where the cars were coming off the hill. I didn't try and take to many pics from the second district race cause well just look above. LOL

his best time was 2.703 seconds averaged around 2.72. the other cars were around 2.75 seconds

He actually did most the work sanding, painting, wetsanding, painting, wetsanding and waxing.
I cut the shape with my scroll saw and showed him how to use the dremel for some sanding and the rest was hand sanded.

Boy do I miss problem solving school projects like this.. very similar to the CO2 car idea.

Thanks I'll try to get a close up of his other car side and top view as well as mine.

I bet you'll never guess where/how I added the lead weight to bring it to as close as 5 oz, to all the cars (except the skinny skinny lepard one)
