Winning design #22 by HidaAjmain, Graphic Design for Intouch Magazine Australia Contest
Gold Medal

designed by HidaAjmain

Project description

The project is to design a magazine cover banner. The name of the magazine is "intouch". the bi-line - which needs to appear somewhere near the name is "with local living". I have attached two sample images that might be used on the cover of the first issue - after the first issue we will likely have people on the covers (people attending local events, local identity, visiting performer etc). The size of the magazine is 240mm wide by 340mm tall. The magazine will be a free magazine and will be picked up at verious drop off points (petrol stations, shopping centres, McDonalds etc) and at least 50% will be distributed directly into mailboxes. UPDATE 8/2/2014: I have uploaded a few potential cover images - can you please make sure that your banner works with other images - it would be good to see it with some different shots to see how versatile it is. Also - there should not be any mention of the word "Australia" in the banner as it is delivered locally and does not require it. This is a magazine for the general public - not a corporate audience so the banner should reflect this.

  • Hello, I have a couple questions to ask about this project: 1. Just confirming, is this a magazine that discusses MS? 2. Are there any specific branding guidelines that need to be followed? (e.g. certain fonts, colours, etc) 3. Would you happen to know how this magazine will be printed; digital or off-set? This is so designers will know how to set up the document. 4. What type of files will you be needing from the winning design? (e.g. Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, print-ready PDF, etc) I was also wondering if you would consider making this a "blind" contest. I have interest in designing a cover for the magazine, but as a personal preference I only participate in blind contests. If it's not a possibility then not to worry; I'll participate if there are a lack of entries. Thank you for your time.

Hi there, to answer your questions: 1) No - this is a local magazine for an area - it is a lifestyle magazine for local residents 2) No branding guidelines 3) It will be offset printed (monthly) - I am more interested in the banner than the cover as a whole. It will need to be provided as an AI file if possible Re: Blind Contest - I have done that before but only after I started getting entries - if they all start looking similar then I'll make it blind. Hope this helps! Cheers, Di

    • Thank you for your response! I understand your decision regarding making the contest blind; I will check back in a couple days and see how the contest is going. With regards to "Intouch", there is already a magazine in Australia that goes by the same name. Just letting you know because I don't know if there are any copyright implications

      All Good. Cheers.

      |--| Im new to this but what do you mean by banner design? I designed a cover can you tell me what is hsould do to fix it? and are photoshop (.psd) files accepted?

    • di1

Hi there, By banner I mean the top part of the magazine where the name is - I gave images because it is helpful to see how the banner is placed on the page and the overall effect - so to answer your question - the magazine cover is fine. I will however need to have the winning design in Illustrator format. Hope this answers your questions. Cheers,Di

      |--| Hi thanks for the reply, I made a new one in illustrator that ill post right now. If possible can you please post example magazine banners that you like?

    • di1

Thanks - I think that posting banners that I like kind of defeats the purpose of running a design contest (i want something new and fresh)- so sorry...

      |--| #2 is a .ai file without the brown background of course. I put the brow background just to show the white outline.

Hi there! I really like your banner design but don't like the solid colour behind it. Could I please see it without this? Thanks!
    • Thank you for the feedback. I've remove the background. How bout #21 now?

    • di1

Thanks - looks great - much more stylish - but you have submitted a new entry which we love (#22) - my only comment about that one would be the amount of text left justified under the banner - could we see it with one of these lines (either the "with local.." or the issue in the line at the end of touch - or do you think this would make it too busy? Love your work!

    • You meant like this #24? tagline on black line-- seem busy to me, quite like it, what do you think?

    • di1

Hi again, thank you for trying that - yes I agree - the initial design is less busy and more striking. Cheers, Di

  • Hi there, my design is #10, thank you so much for the rating! Are there any changes you would like to see in order to improve it? Thanks.
    • di1

HI there, thanks for supporting our contest. We would like a bolder banner and perhaps less "corporate" looking as it is a free magazine for the general public. We need to make sure people pick it up - so the bolder the better. Cheers, Di

  • di1
Hi there, thanks for your entry. We have received other entries which we prefer so we're eliminating this one - please feel free to submit more entries. Thanks for your support of our contest.
  • di1
    as per previous comments.
  • di1
HI there - I have rated another of your entries that we prefer so am eliminating this one. Thanks for your entries. Cheers, Di
  • di1
HI there! Thanks for your entry, the consensus in our office that we liked the fonts but the footprints made it a bit busy - hence the rating - we hope you will submit more entries. Thanks!
  • di1
HI there! I prefer your other banner entry so am eliminating this one. Thanks!
  • di1
Hi there - I really like your banner - but there is no need for the Australian flag and I would prefer no background colour behind the banner. Could you also please show me the banner on one of the other images. Thanks!
  • Hi My entry is #26. I used the exclamation mark as the "I", since that will grab the attention of the people. I made some mockups of covers, you see it looks ok on all pictures. Also changing the color of "IN" is a posibility. Thanks Andrei
    • I just seen its under an hour... No feedback for #26? Thanks and good luck.

    • di1

Hi there - we are in Australia so maybe different time but I thought I had replied? I like your design - but not sure about the font you have used for "with local living" - felt that it should be a little contrasting to the banner font? Cheers, Di

  • i have submitted #25 so you can see what my design looks like in different colours with different images, thanks!
    • di1

HI there - thank you for that - you could tie the "in" with the second colour by also changing it to that colour? Just a thought - could you try a lower case i as well? Thanks, Di

    • I have submitted #34 and #35 from your requests. hope you like. thanks!

  • Hi I have submitted my design and would welcome your opinion on it. Thanks! #37
    • di1

HI there, thanks for submitting your design.I think your banner would look fabulous on an industry (especially interior design or architecture) publication - however - the purpose of this magazine is to keep local residents up to date with everything that's going on in their city. It's free to pick up and should be fun and "social" if that makes sense. Thanks for entering anyway - please feel free to submit other entries. Cheers, Di

  • I am also willing to chance the colour of 'intouch' upon request to something a bit more lively or colourful. Let me know what you think.
