Project description

See http://edmaguire.net/ttphotos for a project brief and to download photos for the site. We would like a design for a new microsite within edmaguire.net to showcase the work that was completed during a crime control project we did in Trinidad and Tobago, a small nation in the Caribbean. The purpose of the project was to diagnose an outbreak of violent crime and recommend solutions to the problem.

The deliverables we are requesting are graphic designs for a home page for the microsite, as well as a sample interior page.

The home page will contain the following elements:

(1) a black bar [edmaguire.phd] carried over from edmaguire.net,
(2) a project title ("Strategic Crime Control in Trinidad and Tobago"),
(3) a photo collage (photos provided),
(4) a 125-150 word description of project,
(5) a 30-50 word acknowledgments section (to thank people who made the project possible),
(6) a series of buttons or links to the site's subpages,
(7) a link to the "Contact Us" page at edmaguire.net.

The photo collage should illustrate Trinidad's beauty and culture as well as the grim reality of its outbreak of violent crime. The best design will combine some of the photographs into a beautiful collage and balance it with all the other elements on the home page. Trinidad has a vibrant and happy culture but our project was about serious topics like gangs, guns, drugs, and homicide.

The site will need to respect the seriousness of the topic. Please leave room for us to expand the buttons (links to subpages) if needed.

For now, the links to subpages should include the following:

(1) About the Project,
(2) Publications,
(3) Instruments and Codebooks,
(4)Project Photos,
(5) Team Roster.

Users of the microsite should feel that they are on a "new" website wit the exception of the black band at the top which carries over from the parent site. The design concept can be independent from the parent website, but should not clash with the design and color scheme of the parent website. The following site performs the same function we are looking for, but we want our site to have a much better design: www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/PHDCN. You can download some project photos to be used in building the collage at www.edmaguire.net/ttphotos or you can use your own.

  • Designers: This is psd graphics only, no coding required for this contest.
  • Hello Ed now in this order , hope you like now Thanks alex
  • Hello ed , here you go i do whit the button , hope you like it Thanks Alex
  • For the designer of #3 and #4, my comments are the same as before: *The links for the subpages are too small and hidden. They need to be more prominent on the page, maybe as buttons or something, not just a little bulleted list that the user can't see easily. *We don't need a contact form on the home page, only a link to the contact page on edmaguire.net. This could be added to the buttons mentioned above. *The Project Description section should be larger and be placed in a more prominent location. * The acknowledgments section should only be about half the size of the project description. Thank you.
  • What you want to change on this design so it can be the design you was looking for , maybe adding the footer on the bottom ? or other color on the background maybe ? Thanks alex
  • Thank you for your submission. This revision made some small changes over the previous version but it does not account for about half of my suggestions and is not really a major improvement. New thinking about the overall design will be necessary for this to be a winning design. Thanks again.
  • Hello ed i made all the changes you say to do. Make the subpages larges make room for the news remove the second photo collage. Thanks Alex
  • Thanks to the designer of entry #3. Here are the issues we see with this design: 1. The lorem ipsum text under the title at the top is not necessary. 2. The title repeats on the photograph. We only want the title once at the top of the page. 3. The links for the subpages are too small and hidden. They need to be more prominent on the page. 4. We don't need a contact form on the home page, only a link to the contact page on edmaguire.net. 5. We don't understand why there is a second photo collage in the middle of the page. 6. The section called "About company name" should be called Project Description. That section should be larger and be placed in a more prominent location. 7. The section called "people who made the project possible" should be called "acknowledgments" and should only be about half the size of the project description. 8. We did not request a "news" section, but it's not a bad idea if there is room for it on the page. Thanks for your entry!
  • Hello edmacjj i made the changes you sad to me. And if you want to change the big picture or the little ones , i made it so you can change it.and i made the black band on the top . Thanks Alex
  • I will post the black band on the top in 30 minutes
  • Designers, please don't forget to use the black band from the top of edmaguire.net in your design (the black band says "edmaguire, phd" inside of it. Thanks a lot, Ed
  • Hello edmacjj i made the changes you sad to me. And if you want to change the big picture or the little ones , i made it so you can change it. Thanks Alex
  • Vasili, thanks for your entry (#1). Please include the black band (containing edmaguire, phd) at the top of the design. Also, in the title, please put the word Tobago at the end. We don't need the links at the top (home, biography, etc...) because those are from the parent site. But we do need the links at the bottom (About the project, Publications, etc...) to be in a more prominent location. Below the big picture, the title of the project (Strategic Crime...) appears for a second time - we really only need it once at the top. I'm not sure if the photo collage with 5 pictures is related to the big picture at the top or if it is something separate. Also, in the acknowledgements section, we will only use words, not photographs. Thank you very much for your entry and we look forward to seeing a revision.
  • Hi, I will be submitting the design soon Thanks, CSS Chimp
  • Designers: this is psd graphics only. two pages only. Home page and sub page. Buttons for future pages to be on home page.
  • Thanks for your contribution. I do not want a photo gallery that we have to click on to change the photo. We want to have a photo collage. Thanks very much.
  • Hello Ed i made the new design whit the navigation bar buttons , for your photo collage i made the 1,2,3,4 where people can click and then its show complete new picture , Hope you like it Thanks alex
  • The photo collage is very important to us, so please consider other options, making some photos large and some smaller, playing around with the shapes and the details, and paying careful attention to the selection of photos used in the collage. Thanks again to all the designers for your hard work.
  • Thanks for submitting another version. We'd like to see a version that uses a subset of photos but this one didn't really work for us.
  • Hello, Here is another design version of header with images.
