Why is that? It is the quickest and easiest way to apply great effects to shapes, text, etc. in photoshop.

Good newbie tutorial penguinpedia. Leaves some definite play room for new ideas and ameliorations. On the layer style issue, I don't see why you don't like it either. It is easily one of the best new features of photoshop that allows it to be used for webgraphics on a daily basis. The only reason I can think of that would make you dislike the use of them in tutorials is if you have an older version of photoshop.

I'm guessing he's probably upset about the layer-style overload web design cliche...but that's not a problem with this tutorial. Layer Styles don't have to look like crap, they just do if they're overt instead of subtle. These are subtle. Good tutorial penguin!

I'm not a fan of the final product (I don't like "shiny things", dark and dingy suits me better), but the tutorial itself is good

yea its a not bad tutorial, but there could be some not to bad additions, fill it with an orange say: #E4A11F
1.apply you're tutorial effects
2.grab the dodge tool around 50% opacity and size depends on the designer, and dodge the bottom half of the interface, which works really swell for icons and the likes.

I agree the dodge/burn/sponge tools, a little paint, soft-erasor, little bit of texture and some gloss layers can truely give a nice aqua/glass effect.
I have to say i like them, if done in the right proper way. But unfortunatelly most fail there. I always see those huge buttons with twice as large shadows dropping in all directions, hard 100% white gloss effects and so on. But if done like most is in MacOS-X, iam loving it
Nice tutorial, gives the beginners a nice view of working with layer effects where they can develop more skills by practising with it. Good job.

A lot of it seems to be just common sense, I'm not sure anyone would need a tutorial for this unless they were extremely inexperienced.
I would have to disagree with you. Having experience trying to teach people how to use tools in photoshop, and how to use photoshop in general, I know how difficult the program is to learn.
This tutorial, as long as my other tutorials, introduce new users of photoshop to the basic tools and also help them learn certain techniques.
What may be common sense to you, a designer who has worked with photoshop for a while, may not be common sense to someone who just picked up the program.

Its a great tutorial. It will help new users get used to layer modes, layer styles, filters and opacity settings. Nobody is born with a Photoshop manual in their heads. With a bit of practice people can use these techniques to create something that looks totally different. Very helpful in my opinion, and whether you personally like glassy interfaces or not is really irrelevant, as most serious photoshop users sooner or later go into freelance design, or get professional jobs, and then it really doesnt matter what you like, its all about what the clients like.
