It's definitely an axe. Here is an quotation;

Ok so I redid mine without the gun
This time I also paid more attention to the drawing on the cover and decided to go all out rather than having a vague outline.
When you look at it you should be looking through a window into the main character's mind (hence the colors and the overall style).
Enjoy...
