Remember back in the day when screens only displayed orange on black? There was no MS Windows, all navigation was through DOS. But fortunately there was a simple paint program. That's when I started "designing".
Later on, when I became serious about design in high school I go around finding local coffee shops that just opened and needed flyers, signage, etc.

Hehe, I'm 24 too :-] Seems to be a quit young group here...
edit: Oups, just read the topic a bit more *g*. I've began working with photoshop with 16-17 years. I never liked to draw in school so art wasn't something which interested me.
Now I'm 24 and love to do some artwork, skins and websites :-] Thats all

I started around 14 and i'm 23 now. When my dad got a PC i played with paint to create topdown armies. Like ranks of soldiers and tanks and stuff. Then had imaginary battles with the eraser tool LMAO, that was sweeet.

I've been coding since I was 9 or 10...obviously only with HTML at that age and some basic JS...from there I started learning other things like QBasic and VB...then eventually Java and C++ and PHP and Perl and some other good ones..

yea i started around 2 years ago so about when i was 15 id say.
basically started playing with photoshop, and created a layout for a free hosting co, which closed( of course), but that started me on a design kind of spree, with wich i have learnt basic html skills, css, php, and i know so visual basic with which i took courses in and got some kind of awards..(what good are they lol)

I never did get into Photoshop, I'm a Paint Shop Pro lover. And thats what I seemed to stick with. I'm most comfortable. But lately i've been venturing off trying out different software, so maybe one day I will get converted over to the all mighty evil Photoshop. I always loved graphics design, and started when I was 12 years old. My first page was extremely HORRIBLE, using notepad for html design and reading up. Even my first graphics wernt great, and I still don't consider them great they could be much better. But I'm happy where I'm at right now, reading tutorials and going to be taking graphics design in college when I go (17 right now btw) so still a few years to go before I can start that 
but I keep busy here designing things for a hobby and have a great time doing so!

Holy Cow - am I the oldest old lady here, LMBO! I am 31, and started "fiddling" with computers when I was 15 - I do indeed remember the old "dos LKF - and BBS only coversations".
I started playing with Windows Notepad in 1992, and making really ugly HTML pages - but Hey - I have never used FP in my whole career so that is something to be proud of...L O L I taught myself to code with the Netscape "tutorial on HTML" and used the Bellsouth Netscape browser to make stuff.... just stuff.
Got hired by a search engine company, doing webmaster junk in notepad, learned Phototshop (this was in 93 btw) - then started doing my own thing. I spent a few months on site with a Search Engine Optimization (98) company, then as a Creative Director for an online Medical Firm (99) - never worked for anyone since... just little ole me.
Learned Illustrator in 1999 when I needed to make a logo for a job (Art Deco Hotels - its in my port on my site) but I don't do logos ever now... I have others to do them.
Learned CSS in 1999 - and now do full CSS designs I also spend WAY too much time assessing HijackThis Logs for people who just don't understand that Hotbar is BAAADD~ L O L
So that is me in a walnut shell

I started with the programming languages like Basic and C when I was about 13 but didn't get into graphics and webdesign until about 15. I've never looked back much on the heavy programming; it's too intensive and design is just too fun

14, it was for a Duke Nukem 3d TC i was "working on" which meant i made a couple levels and guys that vaguely looked like cops and terrorists. Mmyep!

10 with some adobe web tools of some sort, dont remember the name anymore. Built my first page online at around 11, and my first work for cash at 12. Really lousy now that I look back at it. I have improved a lot in the past 3 years. Im only 15 now. Still have a lot to learn.

online gaming began to consume a considerable amount time, webdesign was out of the picture
geocities got very boring and the ads were very discouraging to me. A knight-i call him, in shining armour... let me host off of a subfolder on www.gamecodes.com
I built a page for him in return all about game code links with a 3D ball menu.
To him, webdesign was just a hobby. To me, webdesign was a never ending passion.
in the gaming era I was lead into warez by downloading cracks / patches which lead me to envy alot of the souped up busy looking browser hungry warez sites.. filthy stuff
I began to learn photoshop out of interest and began using it heavily. Then came illustrator, which lead me on to my cleaner designs.
after years and years of portfolio working on a subfolder on www.gamecodes.com/beckner , i decided to register www.pixelbobby.com and make something worth seeing. (personal opinion)
I am going to York College of Pennsylvania later on this month to pursue a degree in graphic design
my portfolio was accepted 1 of 25 out of 1000 heads.
I know you didn't ask for a bio but this was definitely the extent of my learnings by means of graphics and webdesign.- barely scratched the surface...

I was 11 years old. This was back in 1996 when most people had their sites on angelfire, homestead, tripod, and geocities. Unlike most people, I had my first web site on a page that my internet service provided. They were member homepages, and they gave you 50 MB of space to use. I made a whole web site called Girl's Hangout.
