I am self-taugth in both Illustrator and Photoshop, and I find it quite educational to watch tutorials on youtube, or google tutorials for different things to learn. It can be anything. Text tutorials, manipulation tutorials and anything. As long as you do, you learn. In Illustrator it's quite helpful to watch vector illustration tutorials, just search for Illustrator tutorial beginner, and do what they do. After a while you will find that you know how they do things, and before you know it you're doing it yourself.

I learned how to use Photoshop through online video tutorials. I was not really aware of the wonders of this software that time. I was fortunate for stumbling upon a really good website that offers free tutorial. The instructions were very clear and it taught me how to work with Photoshop’s basic tools and take advantage of its applications. I can’t remember coming across an issue with this software that I was not able to work out after referring to this website. If you want to learn Photoshop the way that I did, make sure the website you’ll elect to choose is capable of providing quality video and precise instructions. Try to check on user testimonials to weigh on its effectiveness.

These do have a fee but they are simply awesome: Adobe Training & Tutorials
I watched and recommend the One on one series for Illustrator\Photoshop. Contains a bunch of 5-10 minute clips, they also provide you exercise files. Coherent, easy to follow, easy to understand, really enjoyable. Worth the fee if your time is money and you wish to learn quick be efficient and wish to know every detail.

Hi,
I think tutorials do help you to know what is what.
But, you can master software only through practice. You may find different ways of using the same tool with the basic knowledge you have.
Get the foundation from tutorials and go on to build on it through your practice.
