I begin to sense the frustration that Cleric undoubtably must have felt. I'd like someone to at least think of what I said, as I proposed a solution that I think would benefit both designer and client:

I think that perhaps the solution to the problem as a whole is to forget the money for a second.

Many people here seem to be here either as hobbyists and as students, learning from the experience and from the others here. I'm all for this - I am both a design hobbyist and a constant student of design as I seek to improve upon myself and expand my horizons.

Perhaps instead of simply getting petty cash the rewards for the winner of the contest should get something that would better their work. Better computer computer hardware, Adobe and Macromedia software, and commercial PhotoShop filters are all examples of this. If there were rewards like this, both would benefit: the "client" or person you're doing it for would get the design (or logo or button or whatever it is you are making) and you get better tools to better your craft.

I'd be interested to hear what people think of that.

"I think that perhaps the solution to the problem as a whole..."

Could you please explain the problem as you see it? So I can see your view point better...

The goal of your idea is noble, but not practical.

You did not explain exactly why software prizes would be better then cash prizes. "something that would better their work" is not enough of an argument... becasue cash could also better their work or maybe even pay for a class.

You also have the issue that many young/new designers already have software worth $1,000s by downloading it for free, so I doubt many would put much value at software prizes.

Another issue would be prize payment guarantee, if you noticed some designers were not payed... so now we are trying to get more guaranteed contests where we hold the prize until the winner is chosen. A physical product would complicate this.

Another issue would be type of prize... not everyone would enter if the prize was a (for example a hard drive)... or people would try to sell their prizes... all in all cash keeps it simpler.

And in the end... the majority of the people on here would perfer cash.

As far as software prizes go, here is my two cents:

I think if you Onvx, or resurepus sent a very formal email to adobe/macromedia describing what you do here at designcontest.com and how it helps younger people and students develop design skills, it could be possible to get a hold of a few copies of studio MX and Photoshop 7 (both not the newest versions)

From there, it would be cool if you guys could select some of the best guaranteed contests, and then maybe both first and second place winners of those contests would receive a copy of the software. The shipping costs could be taken out of the orignal prize (which of course would still be offered) and that way two people are winners.

Do you get what I mean? Software prizes would be excellent, and I know I would prefer that over cash. You could try contacting adobe, macromedia, corel and even microsoft to get them to donate some useful software. I am sure its possible :)

I don't think software prizes would be valued highly enough to support the forum. Especially if you're offering older versions of the software.

While the idea itself is good, anyone who's a developer/designer has the latest versions of Flash, Photoshop, etc. already. Whether it be paid for or pirated is another matter - but almost everyone has it.

Now getting Adobe or Macromedia to support the forum. That's a good idea. Maybe they put up a cash prize for a contest. Something to consider.

well.. as a follow up on what I said, I looked at Macromedia and Adobes website.

It is possible for DC.net to obtain software if it is classified as a non-profit organization.. and since I don't see you guys making any profit whatsoever, I think it would be possible to classify DC.net as that.

I suppose it would be in the eyes of the company to decide that.

You'd have to register with your state and county as a non-prof so unless you allready it's alot of work to do that.

yep.. I was just reading up on that on macromedias website. There is still the possibility that the PR person at one of these companies would want to support DC.net.

Onvx - I appreciate your input, but some of the points you raise I have a problem with.

First of all, I am not suggesting that every contest be changed from a money prize to a software/hardware/whatever prize. This would not be practical. I am more in the line of thinking that penguinpedia has - choose one or two high-end contests and put them there.

And if you are going to be in the design industry, the one thing you learn, as a person I know happened to the hard way, is you will NEVER be taken seriously as a designer using pirated software. It's like the expression - "Stealing from Peter to pay Paul" - you stealing a programmer's (or team of programmers') work to make your own.

The one major point of contention I have with what you've said is "And in the end... the majority of the people on here would perfer cash." I know for one thing that if you had a contest such as the one I suggest, with software/hardware prizes, design professionals such as myself may just participate.

You asked me to explain what I thought was the "problem as a whole" - the problem as I see it is that people are worrying too mcuh about a cash payout and not about the work (or some would say art, for those who are hobbyists :) ) By putting up a prize that not merely pays one for working, but encourages one to improve upon one's work, you both attract those people with a genuine interest (not those people putting quick hack jobs in Photoshop for cash, those who it seems Cleric as well as so many others in the design industry are so fond of hating profusely) and help these people improve upon themselves and their work. Money does do that, indirectly. But if I'm just going to use the money to buy Photoshop CS, it would be much simpler just to get Photoshop CS as a prize.

penguinpedia - I agree entirely with what you said the first time out.

Cleric,

Everything you stated in your first post is a bunch of dog shit. This site is used to advance the design community, you say that there are NO REAL GRAPHIC ARTIST posting to this site, well buddy I am as real as they come & who cares if 50% of post are from High School Students, are you mad because your neighboor with PhotoShop he downloaded from Kazzaa is starting to design websites better than you? Or maybee it is just that you are a little on the heavy side, or maybe you are pissed because you are spending all this money to go to a design school and not making any REAL money from graphic arts yet... whatever the case you pissed me off when you started talking shit about the concept of this website and the people that post here. IF you dont like it then dont waste your time posting anymore, i am sure you have alot of client work you can get to.

And if you read any other of my posts you will find out that I do not want to post my portfolio cause i dont want to come off cocky but fuck it you pissed me off. So I will leave you with this,

FACT: I HAVE MADE MORE MONEY IN THE PAST YEAR WITH "GRAPHIC DESIGN" THAN YOUR WHOLE HOUSE AND CAR COMBINED!!!

You should find a much more constructive way to voice your opinions than screaming, attacking others, and being rude.

As is, I got past the first sentence and decided that this wasn't worth reading (still did so I can rebut it).

And how can you call that a fact when you don't know that A: he has a house or car, B: if he does, what kind of house or car he has? Also, is that any of you business?

I couldn't sit through reading all the posts so this may already have been addressed:

Cleric, you say that this site is hurting the professional designers. Funny how many of the contest holders are professional designers outsourcing their work. Looks to me like they are the ones benefiting from it.

Do I get something out of it? I must, or I wouldn't do it. These designers have inspired me.
