The Pen tool it's a perfect tool to trace anything at high quality..you just need to put some effort and a lot of time if the image you want to trace it's complex..

I would agree with using the pen tool. Although at first it seems tricky, with a lot of patience and practice it WILL become your best friend. I have a bad habit of practicing a logo design on Photoshop first, then transfering the entire image to illustrator for submission. Here is where the pen tool is awesome! Once i trace and reproduce my original on Illustrator, this is where I remain throughout the contest for simple element updates, etc.

I use CORELSuiteXn integrated tracing tools ... there are some configs for different sources and results are decent, even neat some times.

Pen Tool is the best. In Corel sometimes even the Trace tools work just fine.

Its maybe off topic, but it seems to me that Illustrator cs6 produces worse traces than cs5. Perhaps I didnt play enough with it.

I use CorelDRAW X5 for tracing, just quick trace and then embellish with curve tools.
