In Illustrator CS5, I can only get the gradient tool to add a horizontal gradient. I can not drag either of the end points around into a vertical gradient. What is going on here that I can't see?

Hi there! You actually wont drag the corners of the gradient tool, but rather set your cursor right near it and you will see a little "rotate" icon pop up. Then you rotate the gradient bar whichever way you need to. You can also use the gradient window and simply change the degrees to set the gradient where you want it to begin and end.

Hello
After adding the gradient to the fill, you can simply grab the gradient tool from the palette and place the required gradient by dragging it. Do check whether gradient 'fill' is active in the gradient docker also.
