They're both great for different things. There's quit a bit of literature on the subject if you ever feel like digging in to the internet. More or less Ps should be used for photo-editing and web-work where as if you're looking for scalable vector artwork such as a logo, use Ai. Golden rule: don't work in Photoshop with text that's going to be printed.

I started working on photoshop and doing high resolution (vector-like) designs only by the use of Pen tool. But just like others says when you learn how to you Vector-base Software like Illustrator. you can probably do better if you are dealing with vector designs. So my stand is both best, because nowadays we must admit we use it both. It is this simple, you do pixelated Designs,(photo) obviously you can work efficiently in PHOTOSHOP. When Dealing in more vivid lay-out and design from scratch you should work in Illustrator.
