When I save in EPS format a dialogue box appears, does anybody know if I have to click the box next to "export area is a drawing" or "export area is a page"? Does this have to do with the file being editable or not? .. thanks

Are you exporting it to EPS? Do a save as and see if that helps in not seeing that message. Regardless of what you choose your file will be editable. I also found this:
