Just got your layers book and am looking forward to jumping in. I have a CRE Loaded template for a new ecommerce website and have to update it to reflect my logo and website header which I still have to create. I have CS4 Web Premium. I have opened the graphic source file which contains hundreds of layers. Do you have any suggestions on how to approach this task in figuring out how to find the layers I need to modify and any organization tips on how to not destroy the template? I have also been trying to determine which program to use -- Photoshop, Illustrator, or Fireworks -- to create the logo and header.
Thanks,

Hi mevector,

illustrator will be better for the logo.
you may want to use PS for the header, more easy to deal with if you want photo effects and things.

Illustrator produces vector graphics which gives you the flexibility of reducing or enlarging the graphic without pixelation. All graphics created in photoshop are raster and will get pixelated if enlarged or reduced beyond the given size of the file and also if they are low resolution.

So things like headers, banners, web pages etc for web use can be done in photoshop and logos/mascots etc can be done in illustrator.

As for the template, go through the layers and make groups. For example, place all header layers in one group similarly place all text in one group and name each group according to your convenience. Its more organized and you don't have to dig for layers when you start working on that template.

Hope this helps!

You can do both in one either PS or AI depend on your skill because website does not need high quality like printing.
