1. Take your shoots in RAW
Take your shoots in RAW (if your camera has it). Using RAW will give you as much control as possible in the post production phase of converting color pictured to black and white pictures.

2. Shoot in Color
Shoot in color only if you are not using RAW, and you can do the conversion to black and white later on your computer. Keep the color data you will have more control over your results when converting the image to black and white on your computer. However if you’re shooting in RAW, then you should switch to Black and White mode and you’ll see the results in the LCD in black and white as well.
3. Shoot with Low ISO
Make your ISO as low as possible. In black and white pictures, the noise created by ISO is very obvious so we need to reduce this as much as possible.
4. Shoot on low contrast situations
It’s better to shoot black and white pictures in low contrast situations. So a cloudy day with no sun would be perfect for black and white pictures.
5. Composition
Get used to noticing shapes, textures and tones as points of interest in your frame. Also pay good attention to highlights and shadows.
