Say resurepus,

Is it mandatory for Design Team members to have to display a link to their portfolio in their profile at all times, or is the portfolio just to get in?

Thanks!

just to get in. you are not required to have it in your profile all the time. you can leave the field blank or place a link to any website you like. But to be honest I don't quite understand why wouldn't you like to get some extra publicity to your website...

Hi guys,

Hmm... there seems to be a lot of folks trying to get Design Team status. I haven't been here very long at all, but I'm guessing that that's one of the major points of this site, no? If so, I think it might be good to create forum categories that are more geared toward helping people become better designers so they can improve their design skills(firstly), and so they can achieve Design Team status faster.

For instance, over at CGTalk(which is where I heard about this DC), they have an Art Techniques and Theory forum that has tutorials and links to VERY helpful sites that help you improve DRASTICALLY as an artist/designer. There are also application specific forums that you can go to for more "tool-based" help.

Well, I read the DC newsletter from resurepus, and this site feels like it is just starting out. So for you upcoming artists (and for you experienced vets), I'd highly recommend visiting:

CGTalk Art Techniques and Theory forum
CGTalk(more 3D/2D painting oriented)
CGTalk Art Tutorials Sticky(tons of links to drawing, composition, theory, etc.)

I'm no master of the arts myself, and I have much to learn. I'm constantly reading and learning about anything art. I did achieve Design Team status at this forum very quickly, and I'm hoping that you other noobs can do the same so we can all start competing and creating beautiful art. Make it about the art, and the other things will come. Well, I think I better get turn off my soap box for today. I'll delve through my bookmarks/site lists and post somemore links that may get you guys competing in these competitions faster.

Cheers for now!
:D

Hello everyone,

Lately, I've been emailing back and forth with Sergey(resurepus) about my recent demotion from Design Team status. I'm still unclear if this was the root cause, but apparently, my last post in this thread above suggesting outside artistic resources/forum help ideas, offended some people. I'm still very unclear on what exactly I said that caused such an abrupt demotion, but to those offended, I do apologize. I have the belief that if you have the ability to help people, you should, and it seems that either the tone, the wording, or choice of words I decided to speak with came off as something else.

I want to see people succeed. Over my lifetime I've seen too many designers say things like, "well, if I teach you everything I know, then I might not have a job," or "I'm not going to show you all my secrets." I personally think that's wrong. You can look back through history and see that every successful master of the arts shares everything they know, and they want people to achieve greatness, even where they have not. Why? Because as soon as people learn how you do things, that opens the door for building on what you are doing, and will eventually generate more ideas and new ways of doing things. Even today, the best digital artists will have tutorials that they've written on their sites and links to helpful information.

IMHO, I believe that as a Design Team member(well, in this case, as my previous status as a DT member), it's my responsibility to help people become better artists/designers, and ultimately help people get on the DT so they can start competing in these DC.net contests. Why would I want the competition? First off, the more people competing means that the contest holders will have more logos to choose from. As more people compete, artists will have to improve their own skills and come up with better art and ideas to compete with each other. Everybody benefits.

I'd like to thank Sergey and the mods for allowing me to voice my opinion. Their was obviously a misinterpretation between what I was thinking, what I wrote, and what people read. I'm not walking away from this with sour grapes. Even after being demoted I've been treated very kindly. I try to be very conscientious about how I word things on forums, and I am still confused on exactly and specifically what, in any of my posts, caused this. If the people I offended could PM me, or PM Sergey and have him PM me exactly what it was, that would be very helpful in the future. The bottom line is, I want to help people and see people succeed, even where I have not.

-Good luck to getting on the Design Team-
:D

I don't know what's wrong with the post either. I thought it was helpful and a great suggestion (though, perhaps suggestions belong in the Suggestions thread). At any rate, it's really none of my business :-).

However, I was a little confused as to how you achieved Design Team status. I noted that you didn't have the minimum amount of posts (10).

Then, I checked your portfolio and went, "oh..."

I can see how that would be a complaint, unless it was inferred that a post you made was offensive. Again, none of my business.

Thanks John,

It's nice to know exactly what it was that offended people. In my defense, I was also considering myself as a new member in that sentence, and I thought that was quite obvious from the amount of posts I have and by the short period of time I've been here. I even mentioned that I'm no art expert and that I'm just passing on some links/ideas that I've always found helpful.

For the record, before my status was stripped, I didn't receive one PM, email, request, or any other form of communication from any registered user, design team member, or admin about editing or changing my post(which I would've gladly done). Instead, the process/bureaucracy operated above me, and I received an email from Sergey saying I'm off the team with no explanation or anything.

In the future, I would hope that DT members aren't deterred from trying to help people, and will at least get backed up half-way when attempting to help do something positive for the community. To me personally, this feels like a jealousy thing someone who has been trying to get into the DT did to spite a current member. I've never been an egotistical guy, and maybe how fast I got in (or how fast they aren't getting in) offended them more than what I said, and a good opportunity came about to express how they felt.

As far as my portfolio goes, I do have an old design portfolio stuffed away, but right now I'm mainly a 3D artist, and I'm using elements of both fine art and design every single day. While browsing around the forums I noticed that other folks have been promoted to DT even faster than I was. If there is some loophole in the rules that need to be revised, then by all means, do what's best for the community.

I'm not better than anybody, nor do I talk down to anybody. As I mentioned in my previous post as well, I'm always learning and growing as an artist, and I don't know of any successful artist who isn't.

In the future, my hope would be that if a member of the community has a problem with someone, try telling that person directly. If that doesn't work and the incident is taken to a higher power, I'd hope that it would be strongly taken into account that everyone here, especially the DT members, is a professional.

Thanks for the reason John, it's nice to know.
:D

Hi Crazy Jimmy
The admins and mods have been discussing in detail about how members should achieve design team status, and we have all agreed that in order for anyone to become a design team member, they must do so in the usual fashion, with no special treatment being given to anyone, this means in order for you, or anyone to become a member of the design team, it must be done either by winning contests in the community contests forum, or by applying for design team status when all of the criteria have been met. This not only gives a fair chance for everyone applying, it also helps current design team members and designcontest staff to integrate with new design team members. The application doesnt just cover skills and creativity, it also covers attitude and personality, which is part of the reason why at least 15 posts are required, it helps us establish professional attitude towards others, and it confirms you are willing to become an active participant in the community.
