I am against sarcastic degrading comments towards someone else's work. Frankly, it's insulting, and when I read some of the things said there I get a strong impression of "I'm superior, these are inferior". Nor do I want to attract those kind of people to this website.

You may not like a design, and you may have your own reasons on why it doesnt work, but I can bet people could give reasons on why it can, and does, work.

Criticizing work should not involve the words "sucks" and "crappy".

If it's something more positive, less degrading, and less filled with comments that remind me of two young boys having a "pee up the wall" contest, then I'm all for it.

I believe this question has already been answered, if you just read the posts very carefully. Also, please include your vote for or against the continuation of the forum.

Well, I see from rep's post:

What we wanted to do is to give a start to the new forum and encourage others to post messages with constructive critisism and tips on how the work could be impoved.

But it doesn't answer the question why this reponsibility was bestowed upon typo. I might be missing something, or maybe I'm just thick, but I can't find the answer anywhere :p

I'M FOR the section of the forum. I believe it has a lot of potential, but it has to be done in the right way. I think following BJ's guidelines, making sure the forum is moderated, and actually having constructive critisicm will be great. (The only thing I'm not sure about - if, in some strange coincidence, the owner of one of these logos walks into this forum, what will their reaction be? I think we should keep that in mind while posting in that thread). I also believe the owners should claim responsibility at least in part if anything like this happens, since it was their idea to have such a section here in the first place.
Just my two cents!

Resurepus, the great leader of this site, acted hastily and gave typo access to his own private ranting forum. No other admins or DC.net staff were consulted before hand.

Well, I supposed Res has a right to, since it's his forum, but it would've been nice if the members (or at least you and the other administrators/mods) had known about it. lol! :D
I suppose there was also some $$$ involved, since typo has his portfolio linked to that forum.
Thanks for answering the question. :p

FOR... I believe with a little bit of respect from our community we can make it work. I discovered this forum, myself, last night... I too felt that it was a bit negative and reflected poorly on the entire DC.net community. Therefore, I posted in response to the negative side of the discussion, as well as to some of the postives, and shared how I felt the issues should be handled. I understand the title of the forum was "Designs that Suck", but since I didn't agree with the concept of the forum I shared my own ideas and hope that at least some of you saw that someone else was thinking as you do.

Maybe the name "Design Critique" would be a better name; that's my opinion.

;)

No matter how it ends up, I would like to thank you, digitalmunky for your attitude. No matter who would be in charge of that critique section, you had the courage and intelligence to prove him that his opinion is not the only possible one. In intelligent and respectful terms you have discussed the issues mentioned on the forum. This kind of discussion I was looking for when I originally created that forum.

I'm a little late on this thread. But, I am against the "designs that suck" section in its current form. I think the name is even rude. There is nothing to be learned or gained in that section. It appears to be rhetoric heavy and constructive criticism light. I would like to see a section that is a true education. "Here is a bad design. Here is how I propose to fix it." This is how each thread should be started in that sectoin. That opens the discussion to improvement of the design. It could be a great learning experience and group mental exercise for all involved.

I agree with Shutterbug. It’s a good idea to show improved design. We are learning from good designs, not from bad. ;)

Over the years I have received through my email (don't you just love people selling your email address) "polls" or "questionaires" that allow whoever has the time to answer the questions a "ranking" type system. Choose 1 for STRONGLY DISLIKE, Choose 5 for STRONGLY LIKE....etc. Perhaps some creative questions could be conjoured up and some kind of form to fill out (check off) could be created; instead of a free-for-all bashing. ---I have not seen the forum that all of you speak so ill about. I really do think it would be benifitial to receive some honest feedback, critisism on my designs ---the familily just loves everything I make...

Designs that suck was my falure. I have asked Alex (_Redrum) to make the decision about the forum's future. So it is absolutely up to him now to decide whether he wants to try and reshape it (with your help, of course) or leave it closed. He has some great ideas for it, but let's see what he has to say about it himself :)

Ok,

First of all, I just want to thank you guys for taking part in the voting, and also for posting suggestions and comments. I can see, from these posts, quite a clear picture being painted. Namely, I see that there are a good number of you who would like to keep the forum going, but give it a fundamental overhaul. I think that this needs to be respected, and so my decision is to keep the forum, but give it a reconstruction of the following sort:

The forum will be pre-moderated:
All new threads, and possibly posts, will be approved before being viewed by the public. If it’s not obvious already, this is a very touchy subject for a lot of individuals, and, therefore, people must be kept on-topic when commenting against someone’s design (this is a design forum after all; it would be nice to keep the bickering to a minimum). As we have seen from a recently moved thread, a simple off-topic thread can very easily go in the direction of argument if those posting new criticism aren’t kept on a tight leash. In fact, I believe that some threads should not even see the light of day because they met none of the criteria for being posted where they are, let alone be allowed to transform into some of the uglier ones we’ve seen thus far.

The Case Studies forum will have the following format:
The organization will be into two types of topics; the first for those who wish to critique a design, and the second for those who wish to have their design critiqued. There will be similar guidelines for both topic types, which are (the topic-starter will be referred to as user):

1. Critique a Specific Design
- user must post a design, cropping everything except the design canvas
- user must initiate Poll Type 2 (see below)
- user has the option of presenting the pros of the design
- user must post (well-worded and considerate) cons of the design
- user must post suggestions on improvement (otherwise he/she has nothing productive to offer and the thread will not be approved)
- user has the option of posting personal comments (also in a well-worded and considerate manner; subjective should not mean rude)
- lastly, and I stress this, user MUST STAY ON TOPIC OF DESIGN

2. Have Your Design Critiqued
- user must post a maximum of 3 (numbered) designs for critique
- user must initiate Poll Type 1 (see below)
- user must provide a small explanation for the design (e.g. for work, play…etc)
- remaining users have the option of posting:
___o original critiques
___o replies to others’ critiques
___o example images
___o helpful links
- remaining users should avoid posting:
___o replies aimed directly at other users
___o replies that use slander to make a point
___o replies that are directly/indirectly insulting to another user
- all inappropriate replies (listed above) will be removed
- user has the option of rating the critiques given after a minimum of a week via some (to be decided) notification signal

The forum will most likely have polls (of two varieties):
Poll Type 1 – This will be the type of poll everyone is used to. It should be initiated if and only if you are posting a design “to be critiqued”, not if you are planning on critiquing a design yourself. The numbers in the poll will reflect the quality of the design, as perceived by the voters.

Poll Type 2 - This poll however, will be unique. Instead of voting for the design, which should already be in the “needs some work” category if it is to be viewed publicly as Topic Type 2 in the Case Studies forum, users will vote on the critiques given by the critic. This will not only help the critic see whether their comments are popular, or if they need to rethink their critiques/strategy, but will also let anyone viewing the thread know if these are true design mistakes or not. So that anyone browsing this thread will look at the rating and realize, that either (a) it has a good rating and the design has the problems that the critic says it has, or (b) it has a bad rating, and anyone who sees the critiques will know to ignore them for the most part.

[Note: Although the poll is focused on giving the critic some feedback, the replies should all be design-oriented and should either add to the criticism or provide counterpoints to the criticism. In general, no replies should be specifically directed towards the critic or other users.]

If you do not know how to start a poll, one will be started for you.

After some ‘period of time’, possibly at the end of the month, the most helpful critique threads will be made Sticky for the remainder of the next ‘period of time’. After this, they will be archived (possibly in a sub-forum). Obviously not every thread will make the cut, and only the ones deemed most worthy will be kept alive in plain view and become Case Studies (as per the name of the forum). I will also speak to Resurepus about sending a DesignContest.net T-shirt to the user with the most helpful thread after the ‘period of time’.

Hopefully with these above rules in place (along with the regular moderation), there will develop a dependency system which will limit the controversy surrounding the critical opinions of others.

None of this is set in stone, but I would like to give this particular system a go. Any additional suggestions are more than welcome and may be implemented if beneficial to the forum.

I'm glad a lot of people were able to give input. It's obvious that, as a community, we are unsure of the thread. That's probably why res gave the decision to red. That was a smart administrative move.

If we don't keep that particular forum, I would still like to see some form of instructional review of past projects, current projects, and so on. Perhaps we could go to finished DT Member contests and critique the logos. It would be a great thread to see specifically why a DT Member designed the project as s/he did.

Bottom line, I would still like to see an educational thread that is supported by members.
