Try to look at the competitor's logos of your client to get a feel, but don't copy anything!
Do some research...
Listen to your client thoughts about the logo.

try to have more information about the real activity of your client, the fist thing to do is to discuss a lot with him :you have to understand his job, his market, the values he wants to communicate through the logo.... etc...
it's the job you have to do before your job, it's often intersting, it's a good way to create a good relationship with your "customer".
