I didnt know where to look for this information. I could not seem to find an FAQ... So here is my problem... When I create my logos in Adobe Illustrator then export them as a jpg...the bright colors become neon and the darker colors become even darker.

I know to set to CMYK...I know I am in that mode... If you look at my portfolio...There are two designs and both of them have the wrong colors.

Help?

You should do your images in rgb for web not cmyk. Hope that helps.

Indeed, imagedFX is right , CMYK is for print and RGB is for online. So before saving your jpg logo, change the mode to RGB.
When you win you will have to give the ch both cmyk and rgb logos (and a few more, but u can find this info in the knowledge database)

It is actually a pain, there has to be a process to follow but i am not sure of how to do this. Usually i save two versions of a file however problem with doing this is getting the right colors can be a challenge.

U would use a color converter to go from CMYK to RGB, like this one, just type in the CMYK and it will give you the rest Color conversion (RGB / CMYK / HSV / YUV / ...) | web.forret.com

What i usually do when i work on logo contests is make the logo in RGB mode, and if i win i bother with making it CMYK, also people don't expect CMYK to be exactly the same color as RGB, and if they do, you need to explain to them that it doesn't work like that :)

Hey guys! Thanks for your replies. I figured it out. I exported my Illustrator work as a png and that seemed to have fixed the issue!

Yah png works however your color will change if you use cmyk setting. Best to work in RGB for online.

For anyone who does this, just a word of caution that there is a good possibility that colours will shift if you convert an RGB file to CMYK. One way to avoid this is to click on the caution icon in the color picker window so the closest CYMK colour will be chosen:

And another way to check if there will be a colour shift (when working in RGB mode) is to preview the document in CMYK:

This way, you can still work in RGB mode but you will see colours as if they were in CMYK. But obviously when you are finished, switch the mode to CMYK.

And of course this is only for designs that will be printed :)

Hope this helps

Try exporting it to .png It will automatically convert the file to RGB. No significant changes in colors.

The colors change because you are exporting rgb from a rgb (or cmyk)vector

when you open a saved vector file in lets say photoshop, open the cmyk, size to what you want, then change your mode to rgb. Once the mode has been changed to rgb you can save the jpg. Your upload will then have the correct colors you want. Those neon or off colors are the result of saving a cmyk as rgb jpg without changing the color mode

Information provided here is very helpful. I've been saving everything as a JPG in RGB mode, but knowing I could save it as a PNG in CMYK to get similar colors seems like it would be more simple (in the case that I win and need to change the mode for print). Along with clicking the caution icon in the color picker to avoid color changes.
