Depending on what is needed .... i usually start my width of a site at about 1100px .... ranging from 700-2000px tall depending on content and what is wanted. Personal websites are best a bit smaller tho. 800-900px wide ... graphics seem more personable when they are not outrageously large. My resolution is 1920 x 1080 ... Really there is no best size .... just go with what you think looks best for that certain project.

Almost every modern day monitor has a 1920 x 1080 resolution after that its 1280x1024.....and it depends on how you want it to look like..:o
