The latest version you can own is CS6 (released April 2012). However, Adobe followed that up by releasing a newer version, CC (Creative Cloud), which requires a monthly/yearly subscription to access.

Creative Cloud is essentially leasing the software. You pay monthly for what you use. In a way its economical and you get the benefit of the latest software. In my opinion, people like me who design full-time would probably do much better owning the latest software with a one-time fixed cost. I've never used the creative cloud interface though so I'm only speaking from a monetary perspective.
