I think nowadays Gimp is as capable as Photoshop. I use Photoshop since 1997-1998 but i can make anything with Gimp what i can with Photoshop.
Gimp is awesome but many don't use it 'coz it's free and photoshop is trendy. (this doesn't mean that photoshop is not the BEST).
