Project description

We need a background slide image to be used with an upcoming sermon series on The Minor Prophets (the biblical books Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi). The series will be called “Plowshares and Pruning Hooks.”

Micah 4:3 (New International Version) says, “He will judge between many peoples and will settle disputes for strong nations far and wide. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.” The Bible often uses the image of nations turning their weapons into farming equipment as a metaphor for peace.

The minor prophets are concerned with justice, peace, and concern for the poor. Along with the sermon series, our church will be doing community service including building a house for a low-income family in Tacoma, doing community clean up on a Native American reservation, building a water tower for a distressed community in Bolivia, painting a house for low-income family in Tacoma, and working with the homeless in San Francisco.

The point of the series (and the message we want the design to communicate) is that God cares for the poor and the disenfranchised and that as followers of Jesus, we should work for justice and peace. The way of God is to “beat our swords into plowshares” by focusing on helping people. You are free to use the biblical imagery of a blacksmith turning plowshares into pruning hooks, but you do not have to. Something more modern or abstract is also welcome. The image does not have to be overtly religious (but it can be). Please look at the examples of what we have used in the past.

The image should have the title: "Plowshares and Pruning Hooks."

We need three versions of the image: (1) 30 inches wide x 20 inches tall to be displayed from a computer projector onto a wall and then later printed on to wood and hung on a wall, (2) square to be used as album artwork for the podcast, and (3) 3.375 inches wide x 8 inches tall for use on the front of our printed bulletin.

I have attached some examples of work we have used in the past. Please let me know what questions you have!
