Project description

We need a background slide image to be used with an upcoming sermon series on Acts 19–28. The series will be called “Bound by the Spirit.”

Chapters 19–28 of Acts highlight Paul’s journey to Rome. In Acts 19:21, Paul resolves in the Spirit that he must go to Jerusalem and then to Rome. When the church in Ephesus begs Paul not to go to Jerusalem (where he is a wanted man), he says “I am going to Jerusalem, bound by the Spirit, not knowing what will happen to me there” (Acts 20:22). Paul encounters obstacles along the way including rioting, imprisonment, conspiracy to kill him, shipwreck, and snakebite, but the theological theme of the passage is that God was guiding Paul to Jerusalem and then to Rome. Nothing could keep him (and the gospel) from getting to Rome because he was “bound by the Spirit” to get there.

The point of the series (and the message we want the design to communicate) is “God is in control and we can trust Him.” Just like God had a plan to get Paul to Rome, He has a plan for us.

The design does not necessarily have to use imagery from the Bible, but it can. The design could allude to some of the stories from Acts 19–28, but it could also go in a completely different direction. The phrase “bound by the Spirit” implies being led like a prisoner (there is a play on words in Acts—Paul is literally a prisoner being led around by the Romans, but he considers himself being led by God). I have included previous contest winners for reference. The design does not have to be overtly religious—I like subtlety. Any design that communicates “God is in control and we can trust Him” could work.

The image should have the title: "Bound by the Spirit."

We need four versions of the image: (1) 30 inches wide x 20 inches tall to be displayed from a computer projector onto a wall and then later printed on to wood and hung on a wall, (2) square to be used as album artwork for the podcast, (3) 3.375 inches wide x 8 inches tall for use on the front of our printed bulletin, and (4) 851 x 315 pixels for the banner of our Facebook page.

I have attached some examples of work we have used in the past. Please let me know what questions you have!
