Logo for a Flyball Club

Mostly, we've had a very positive experience using DesignContest.com to get our club logo created. The winning designer was excellent in helping us get exactly what we wanted after his design was chosen, and everyone in our club is very happy with the end result. We got so many good entries that we had trouble deciding on which one we were going to use! Thanks for giving our club the opportunity to get a great logo at a reasonable price!

Winning design #87 by redspidey, Logo Design for Logo for a Flyball Club Contest

Project description

We need a logo that represents our New Mexico-based flyball club, Sandia EnchantMutts, to be used on shirts, business cards and a banner. "Sandia" means watermelon, in Spanish, and is the name of the mountains to the east of Albuquerque, while "EnchantMutts" is a play on New Mexico being the Land of Enchantment. Flyball is a sport of dog relay racing. See the following video to get an idea of what the sport looks like, in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=hdLs_bH7vLI We would like to incorporate the Sandia Mountains into the design, somehow (maybe having a dog jumping over/through them?), and a watermelon, too. Since the dogs carry a tennis ball in the sport, maybe the watermelon could replace the ball, but we're open to other ideas. Possibly a font that has sharp angles, like mountains, could work. A petroglyph-style dog would be in keeping with the New Mexico angle, though any generic dog would work. The Zia, being the symbol on the NM flag, could also be incorporated, though it's not essential. Watermelon colors are preferred, but other colors are not a deal-breaker. Everyone: I previously requested that the club's 'home' of Edgewood, NM be included in the logo, but I've been reminded that we have people from various locations, so we can drop that requirement. The goal of our team is to have fun while doing our best, with being competitive taking a back seat to teamwork, good sportsmanship, and camaraderie, and it would be great if the logo could reflect that, somehow.

  • Hello ladyhawke, I've just submitted my design #6. Please let me know of any criticism or changes you may want! I tried to add in all the visual suggestions you made, along with a similar color palette. Wanted to make something fun and light hearted, hope you like it!
  • If you have the chance, look over my design #5. I realized after I submitted that I misspelled "Enchantmutts" and I'll change it in my next submission!
  • Interesting. The dog itself could use a bit of work--I had trouble telling it was a dog, at first. And I'm not sure what the three lines are over the dog, in the circle. The Zia lines could be added to the circle, and we should include "Edgewood, New Mexico" in there somewhere (sorry, I forgot to include that in the brief, originally, but it's there now).
    • thanks for the pleasant feedback CH, Pls check my revised entry #4. Thanks! Best regards!

  • Hi CH, Please find my entry #1, I hope I have interpreted the brief correctly. Feedback greatly appreciated. Regards SJK
    • Not sure who CH is, but I just posted a comment with some feedback. Let me know if you didn't get it--this is my first time using this service and I'm bound to make some mistakes...

    • Sorry CH is short for Contest Holder. Thats no problem i'll take your comments on board and come up with further designs. Regards SJK

    • Thanks for the clarification--I'm brand new to this system. I look forward to seeing the changes.

  • The colors are right and I like the image of the mountains, but the overall impression of this logo reminds me of dog food or other product more than a dog sport--there's not a lot of movement in the image (I'm not sure if I'm expressing that correctly--feel free to ask me clarifying questions). It would also be nice to see a more creative font. Also, the club is based in Edgewood, New Mexico. Sorry I didn't clarify that in the brief--I'll fix that now.
  • Much better! I like the dog being outside of the emblem. Is it possible to tweak the front feet? The "heel" on the front-most paw suggests hooves to me, more than paws. Also, can we try a mixed-case font with the name, having just the S,E, and M as capital letters?

      |--| All right! Is there anything else you would want me to change? Unfortunately I only have one more submission!

    • I've asked the people in the club to come take a look and give me any feedback they have (after all, they have to wear it, too). I wasn't aware the participants had limits on entries but if you're down to your last one, hang tight a bit before posting it, so I can pass any team comments on to you and you can include them in your next entry. Oh, and don't be afraid to ping me if I don't get back to you within the next 24 hours or so. I'm getting pulled in a lot of different directions at the moment...

      |--| Okay got it just tell me what you think and hopefully they'll like it! Sorry ping lol? Is that a designcontest term? No big deal! Just message me when you can!

    • LOL--sorry. 'Ping' just means to send me a reminder message, in case I forget.

    • Haha oh whoops. All right I look forward to what your friend says! Talk to you soon!

  • Nice! Could I see what it looks like with a Zia (or 3/4ths of a Zia, anyway) in the background, instead of a tennis ball? Also, let's try with the red parts of the dog as white or having the dog as solid black.
  • Much better! Lots of motion and a good font.
    • Thats great, do you have any suggestions to perhaps improve it to your satisfaction? Also as mentioned in the previous comment, is it possible to start rating all of your designs. Regards SJK

    • Maybe, if there's a way to incorporate the mountains? I'm not sure it's necessary, but it would be nice to see it to compare. I'll rate the entries later today, when I have time to do a thorough job. Thanks for the pointer!

    • Thats great, i'll have a play and get back to you. Constructive comments and ratings are so helpful for us as designers, it will help us progress in the contest and produce your ideal logo. Thanks again SJK

  • Hi Ladyhawke, I have tried to take your comments on board and have produced design #12, I hope it captures the dynamic movement aspect of the sport. Feedback greatly appreciated. May I also suggest you start to rate the designs in your contest, as we as designers have something to go by and this may help us produce your desired logo. Regards SJK
    • I posted a comment for #12--let me know if you don't see it. I will go ahead and start rating the designs, but it will probably be later today so that I have time to think through it well enough.

  • A good alternative font...still favoring the font in #8, I think...but I like the reversed colors better. I'm missing the antiquing (correct word?) of the previous entries. I think it added character.
  • Interesting font! I do think I like the one in #8 better, but I'm not counting this one out yet. Ultimately, we would probably want the reversed colors again, whichever one we might choose.
  • Interesting--I'd like to see it with the colors reversed, so that it looks more like a watermelon. The dog is more recognizable in this one--thanks!
    • Heres the reversed color CH, pls check my design entry #7. THanks! Sorry about the missed post.

    • I was worried I wouldn't like it as much as the original color choice, but I like it better. Thanks! Next: Can we do something more creative with the font? Maybe something that makes you think 'mountains' or 'movement'? (Not sure if I'm explaining it well--ask if clarification needed...)

    • you mean like tribal fonts, or something which suggest movements?

    • Let me explore some fonts, I will upload some version for you to choose from. Thank you!

    • Looking forward to seeing them--thanks!

    • Do you mean like tribal fonts? or some fonts that suggest movement?

    • Not sure exactly what tribal fonts are, but if they suggest petroglyphs (common in NM), that would be neat. Fonts that suggest movement or play time or something fun and interesting would be more like what I'm thinking of.

    • Oh that! THanks! Pls check my entry #8, what do you think?

    • MUCH better--thanks!

    • Heres a more positive play of fonts, pls check entry#9.

    • Pls check my latest revision CH, thanks! I hope you like it. Best Regards. Finestroke

  • Hey so I redesigned the logo. What do you think of #10?
  • I'm not seeing any difference between this one and #3--am I missing something?
    • Oh about that CH, the white space between the text the and image.

    • Okay--I see it now. Not sure whether I like it better with or without the white space....

  • I wasn't thinking along these lines, but this one is definitely intriguing. The only thing I'd like is more motion, as this IS a dog sport the logo is for. But I will definitely consider it.
    • Heres the reversed color CH, pls check design entry #7. THanks!

    • I thought I replied to this, but it's not showing up--sorry if it's duplicated somewhere that I'm missing... I was a bit worried that I wouldn't like the reversed color as much, but I like it better! Next: Can we do something more creative with the font?

  • About #5 Thank you for the comments. Should I stay on the emblem route or try to redesign something else?
    • I think it might work better if you try another approach, since anything in an emblem form will probably look more 'stable' (if that makes sense--if not, feel free to ask me questions) than 'active'. Since the dogs are racing and this is a fast-paced sport, motion is a good thing to incorporate.

    • All right. I was thinking of a soccer emblem while I was designing it lol. I'll try one more thing and if you dont like it, I'll try a different approach. Instead of doing a side profile I'll do a leaping dog. I'll submit it later today!

    • Cool--if you can have the dog leaping over mountains that kinda/sorta look like the jumps, that would be good...

  • Hi and thank you for the submission. Like I commented about entry #1, this logo is pretty static and reminiscent more of dog food than a dog sport.
  • Hello! It's my first post #18 and I need your feedback. (I try to make it as different as possible from the other designs, more minimalistic and with a little humour in it. Tell me if you like it so I can make it better. Thank you!
    • It is cute and original. Is there any way you can try having the dog coming out of the watermelon to jump over a flyball jump (check the video for what the jumps look like)? That would help tie it to the sport better and give it a bit of motion. Also, 'Team' should be 'Club'.

    • Here is my second post #33 I've changed it according to your advice. Let me know if you like it and what I can modify to make it better. Thank you!

  • Dear CH, Pls check my new entry #22. I hope you like it. Thank you very much! Best regards!
    • I do like it--cutting the mountains out of a watermelon is something I never thought about doing. Though I am having difficulty telling the difference between #21 and #22...?

    • Also, we'd like to see the ball in the dog's mouth, since carrying the ball is an important part of the sport.

    • Hi CH, Thanks for the pleasant feedback. Im glad you liked it. Let me edit this one for you.. Thank you!

    • Hi CH, heres the edit CH, Pls check design entry #25, as you can see ive been working on the balance on the logo, thats why I upload some till I came up with logo #25. I hope you like it. Thank you! Best Regards.

  • LOL--I never thought of the dog 'carrying' the watermelon that way! It's cute, but I don't think it's going to work as a flyball logo, mostly because the dog looks like he's working instead of having fun.
    • Yes, I am glad with yours conclusion :). I just try to make something more different. I will post other design. All the best. Avram B.
