Winning design #9 by ShiftingBlue, Trade Show Swag Design for Sailormouth India Pale Ale (IPA) Contest
Gold Medal

Project description

This is a label (so realize that on a bottle this image might be 4x4inches) for an India Pale Ale beer. India Pale Ales are bitter and use a lot of hops. The design is to play off of this bitterness and extra hops and the dirty mouths of sailors, but in this case the sailor's mouth is dirtied by hops. I am not tied to a military sailor character, but a happy beer drinker in a boat, or just a face of a happy beer drinker. The name "Sailormouth IPA" should appear on the image.

  • I like this presentation. The only other major component I would tweak would be the sailor character. As opposed to a realistic character, I would like more of a "stick figure" sort of representation or perhaps cartoon like, and I am thinking more dirty pirate then clean cut sailor.
    • Great! What are your thoughts on Entry #4? I made the sailor more cartoon-like and less clean cut. Thanks!

    • If there was a way to make it look like the sailor was biting down on a hop instead of the pipe, that would be ideal. That said, the character is much more in-line with what I was thinking.

  • Hello! I have submitted Entries #1 and #2 and would love to hear your thoughts/changes you might suggest. Thanks!
    • Entry 1 is the only one I see. I would throw out the circle component as this is very common in beer labels and I would like to see something more unique.

  • All right, #6, #7, and #8 all have the sailor biting down on a hop in slightly different orientations. What do you think of these?
    • I like number six it looks the most natural. This is a pretty solid design, the only thing that is still not 100% is the sailor. He has too much of an identity, if that makes sense. I want him more anonymous. I don't know if you reworked the colors so that his hat and shirt are the same off white color that is outlining the large hop and maybe his beard and tie are the brown of the background, or black, and maybe he has no skin color, but the orange behind it comes through?

    • I agree. #9 is a quick color adjustment to make the shirt and hat the same color as the outer hop outline so that the sailor doesn't pop out so much. I made the skin tone an average of the shirt and the background which looked better than just letting the background show through. Thoughts?

  • Hey Contest Holder! I went for a more modern approach with submission #10. If you could let me know what you think, that would be great!
    • I like the idea, but the execution is a little different then what I was thinking. I would more prominently feature hops and it needs to be a little more obvious that it is a mouth. Imagine people scanning a shelf full of different beers and this one has to jump out to them.

    • Thanks for you for feedback! I tried something completely different with #11. It's just in black and white right now. If you like it, I can add color, but I didn't want to spend my time on that if the style isn't what you're looking for.

  • Are there any further adjustments you might like to see to #9? I'm more than happy to try some changes
    • I would like to see the sailor with rougher drawn lines maybe thicker, but not as crisp as they are now.
