Design Contest and some thoughts.

I pm'ed resurepus a while back w/ my thoughts about DC and that I had some ideas. One of my thoughts was in line w/ my comment in this thread - http://www.designcon...html#post109192
Although I don't want to just blurt out a bunch of ideas at once I figured I'd think about it for a while. I've decided to take part of the linked above and continue it here. And as we speak about it I'll post up some of my other ideas.
But lets start here.
I'm a person that loves to contribute; and see it as a sad fact that no (not all but most) others tend to not guide those looking for help or that ask for simple direction.
I won't quote the entire post cause we can all read and just wanted to add that there should be some sort of repremand if you will for an Elite designer that doesn't participate. If they are only here to be apart of the contest then this site will not be anything better than any other contest site that I'll refrane from mentioning.
I also think deleting accounts of those that are no longer active participants in contests. Not off the board but take their "green" away..
also kinda along these lines.
What type of designer is DC looking for? I know whe have standards but is someone more illustrative going to be turned down quicker than a more "commercial" type of designer. Maybe we should outline what type of clientell DC wants to have/be associated with? if it's not one way or another then some general guidelines for whomever is choosing the elite with some sort of reply list? since I know it'd be time consuming to give a specific 'critique' of applicants submission. maybe even a nice little if you did this or that different it'd be better.. I'm not 100% sure about these thoughts since I'm not familiar w/ the amount of submissions are posted for elite applicants or if there is allready something like this.
One of my other ideas.
I think there could be some great articals posted on this site. speak to high level ad agencies asking questions specific to design and the future of it or things like that. Why should DC simply copy and paste a link to something similar, why not go and make a mark. People/students/other designers would like to read things like that. Hell have an interview w/ any large company and ask what they want from a desiger.
Has anyone seen the new chevy commercials? I thought it was brilliant, giving the public a feeling of a rebirth or something... ask Dodge, Walmart, Nike whomever what they would want from a designer, ad agency or what have you. It'd be interesting, to me at least. Maybe even a tips/tricks from some of the elite, that may helpt that student or hobbiest?
Just some thoughts, lets discusse.
oh and sorry for any misspeallings. LOL

I couldn't agree with you more Coy as we have already talked about this. I am sure resurepus agrees that he does not want this site to be a design contest site but more of a community and the design contest's are to help the small time clients not willing or un able to pay for a professional design due to either financial problems or just starting out.
I can not stress it enough...if you are reading this and you are a designer on here that just wants to make money...go to another site to make money. This is for designers that want to be a part of something bigger than a pool of designers trying to steal one anothers works to come out ontop.

resuperus in a ideal world want for this site to be all about design community and everything related to that but, in the real world resurepus needs the paying CH that bring contests to the site and needs good to exceptional designers to keep CH's happy and keep the money comming in in order to keep the site up and running. Without that part, the commercial one, there will be no design community, you can bet on that.
Sad, but its the truth.
Others thoughs for later, perhaps.

Trust me I truely understand what you are saying.
But let's think of it this way.
If more designers are drawn (no pun) to this site not just because of contests but because of context. there will be more "buzz" and more notice to the site. There for creating more income.
I also think with the level of designers DC could also have it's own "shirt store" or sell art via the site. There are a few ways to set this up but I was wanting to discuss this a little later but since I've brought it up...
DC could set it up that the designer of a shirt gets a percentage of sales directly to their paypal or what have you. the larger percentage should go towards DC for promoting the site and overall costs as well as the site's owner making a little as it's just fair. just call it DC shirt store.. and I think the elite should be the only ones able to submite any shirt ideas. I wouldn't go overboard w/ 1000's and 1000's of shirts but you get where I'm coming from.
I'd really like to open this conversation up with more participants.

I've personally received feedback from both elite and non-elite designers. Of course, it does seem to be the same handful of elite designers that frequent the forums, so it would be nice to see some other elite designers chip in and help out the little guys more often!
I also like the community contests, especially since they're open to anyone and they give everybody a chance to have fun while sharpening their design/sketching skills. While I'd be lying if I said that I wouldn't like to make money from designs, I can say that I'm perfectly content sharpening my skills and staying on top of the latest design news by participating in the forums and contests.

From a non-elite designer standpoint, I find Design Contest to be a great learning tool - not just a place to make money. I visit the forums for inspiration, news, feedback, and great conversation with creative people from all over the world (something you don't see on just any design contest site)!

I started this as a non-elite designer and this site has helped me sharpen my tools, so I know where you are coming from.
I've discussed some way's of having more of the elite designers participate especially in the critique area as to help others. most have stated they are simply to busy but will try to do more. I really do understand where they are coming from as I'm in the same type of boat, but I try to make it a point to check and respond to each area of the forum. With my additional work load I'm not able to participate fully 100% in the community contests and can't get to some of the paid contests either. So my first priority when at DC is to provide feedback where I can and assist those that were in my shoes not to long ago.
thanks for the nice coment shefshef

I was looking for a site where I can show my self in contests, and from many others I choose this one. Not for the money. It was for the strong comunity that I see here.
You do great work here, and I will be happy to be part of it.

I am on my way to try to become an elite designer and hopefully in the future more. I have been looking for a site just like this which is pretty tight nit, yet is a very fun and *active* forum.
I have a ton of experience in the design field, but I see that some of the non elite designers may have none. It is VERY hard to have your work posted up there and get bashed.
I think that with time people will put their works up their.
If you ever want a second eye on something feel free to PM me as well!
See ya later,

I'm sure your insite would be appreciated on an array of posts here = Works In Progress - Design Contest Forums
I have a few up as well. you may or maynot have seen some of them.
DC is currently in a revamp to boost the site and the more community activity we have the better the site will be for seasoned and new designers alike. Part of the revamp is opening up some contests to non-elite, thus giving the contest holders more options.
We won't go into detail about the benefits or comparisions to the differences in the contests but in any sense it's a good time to hop on board to DC.
We've also tossed the idea around to have it manatory for the Elite Team members to participate or loose their title.
