When I am working on stuff, I tend to listen to relaxing music or cosmic music. Like New Age or Adult Contemporary Instrumental. No words, because I find it hard to write my own words when listening to those of others. So just instrumental music for me. Movie soundtracks mostly.
But that is me.

Incubus, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Garbage, A Perfect Circle, Orange Range (japanese band) the b52s, System Of A Down, Marilyn Manson, and Soundgarden are among a few. hmm, there are too many! lol.
You named Tool, NIN and the B-52's, I cannot approve of those choices enough. When I'm working it generally has to be something i can tune out. NIN's Ghost's recordings or Godspeed You! Black Emporer (they may have moved the !) for example. Or Explosions in the sky, Battles, that kind of thing.
