i use photoshop aswell, though the fact my keyboard shortcuts died on me has become a pain as of late :(
And you simply must dabble with msPaint every once in a while, just for chuckles :)
i recently got freehand but havn't tried it yet.
is there anything good out there that'd be a good idea to try?, im pretty new to desiging and what-not :)

In the 2D field, mainly Photoshop, Gimp and Flash5.

By few days I started to use also Sodipodi and Serif DrawPlus.

In the past I use also Painter5

I do pretty much all my image editing/creation in Photoshop. And while I have Freehand, if I have any vector drawing to do I will use Flash. I really like the way the drawing tools work, though I have been using the Path tool more often in Photoshop lately.

If you are not using Photoshop to save your images, I would recommend doing so. When you have your image open in Photoshop, go to File>Save for Web. This will open up an Image Ready dialogue box will all kinds of output options. A couple of quick tips...if you are saving to .GIF then make sure you have the number of colors set to 256. Also, you might consider saving to either .PNG-8 or .PNG-24 instead. .PNG-24 will give you slightly larger file sizes in most cases, but it has the best trasparency out of the three formats.

My keyboard shortcuts 'die' on me occasionally as well. This has always been fixed by either restarting the program or in extreme cases, rebooting the computer. If that doesn't help and you just can't get them back I would recommend uninstalling then reinstalling Photoshop. That should reset things to their original state.

Photoshop, Painter, and Fireworks <--pixels
Illustrator, Freehand <--vector

I usually import from Illustrator or Freehand to Flash only because it's easier to work in those programs, and you can get more out of them.
