Hey guys
Earlier when I exported my work to png from illustrator, it used to ask me the size of the output. Like 640 x 480 etc.
Now it doesn't show any dialog like that. It was a handy thing. Any ideas what changed?

Hello candyfloss,
Well, if you click File>Export and save your graphic as a .PNG or .JPG you must click the check box that says "Use Artboards" next to it and the dimensions of your of images will correspond with those of your Artboards (to set an Artboard's dimensions select the Artboard Tool (Shift+O) and adjust the dimensions by hand or type them in the Control panel.)
If you click File>Save for Web and Devices (Alt+Shift+Ctrl+S) then you must click the Image Size tab (in between the Color Table and Layers tabs.) There you can type in the desired dimensions (this may shrink your graphic so it is better to use the Artboard Tool to get the desired dimensions for your graphic.)
Also, when creating a new file (File>New or Ctrl+N) in Adobe Illustrator you can set the number of Artboards and the dimensions of each in the New Document window.

Save for web option was left untouched by me in the past. Thanks for that insight. I will be using it a lot from now on. However what I was talking about was a dialog which appeared after I tried to 'export' png.
This matter is now of polite curiosity because the 'Save for web' option really nails it down for me.

When I was working on the graphics for my online portfolio I thought that when you save an image as .PNG either in Illustrator or Photoshop that's it, it's finally optimized for web. But then my files were still large because I really wanted to present sharp graphics so I needed to find further solution how to minimize the size without downgrading the quality of the image. And I found the most helpful software that solved my problem, and also helped in speeding up my website's load time.
