Hey Buntstift you can also search for photoshop actions made specially with steel effects and simplify the task.

I saw one more tutorial to get the brushed metal effect. But, it was a lengthy process. Whatever is mentioned here has got hardly few steps and it is easy. Thanks mate.

don't need to, just play with Blacl/White contrast in Gradient tool, and transparency layers on the top with gradient and you get a cool looking steel :)
