Which is better as they both contest themselves alway, me personally i use a combo of both brands, eg FLash and photoshop. Or is it better to stick with just one lol. lets see.

This is like comparing apples and oranges. Adobe has photoshop, the best imaging prog. BUt macromedia has flash which adobe has no real equivalent.

Adobe yeah, has Photoshop, macromedia has Dreamweaver, and contribute2. 2 nice tools for web designers.

It REALLY depends on what you do. I primarily design logos, so I need a vector illustration program, first and foremost, -- I use Adobe Illustrator instead of Macromedia Freehand. I also use Photoshop as opposed to Macromedia Fireworks (although, not in designing logos). I think that Adobe has the upper hand in the vector illustration and digital image editting area.
Now, if I were primarily a web designer, then I would go with Macromedia. More specifically, I would go and buy Macromedia Studio MX and use Fireworks instead of Photoshop just because it would be cheaper (I think) than buying Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Dreamweaver and Macromedia Flash MX. Also, I would think (and I have heard from some) that Macromedia MX applications has good integration with each other.
In summation, here is MY humble opinion: If you are primarily a graphics designer (i.e. logo designer, banner designer, layout designer, etc.), Adobe would be your company because of Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe In-Design.
If you were primarily a web designer, or Flash animations designer then Macromedia would be right for you, because of Macromedia Flash and Macromedia Dreamweaver.

I use a combination of all the above plus throw in Corel products like Corel Draw, and Painter. Corel is highly under rated. Their user interface is a lot more intuitive than that of Adobe.
My Fav is Flash though.

I agree with phacker, corel is also very good, but for vector drawing with graph. tablet - i can't decide between flash and illustrator... PS is the best for some bitmap editing, Fireworks for other... so, both Adobe and Macromedia are great.

psyris, illustrator's drawing utilities are quite "powerful", it has tools that allow you to produce accurate drawings, but I find flash's drawing utilities more intuitive

Quark Xpress as well as Indesign is strictly for layout, you don't design in it, persay. You create the stuff in other programs and lay it out in Quark. If you take a look at my portfolio all those collateral pieces I've done for Reebok, were done in Quark or Indesign, but graphics in either Photoshop or Illustrator.

i prefer illistrator and photoshop. i havn't seemed to find much interest in flash or with dreamweaver. i dont like the interfaces in macromedia products so well.
i got some swish products, havnt had chance to try them yet.
p.s. miao glad to see i'm not the only one that prefers notepad over dreamweaver/front page

I find that you can accomplish what you want with one app if you are versed in that app. But I use a combination of a lot of apps to get the result I am looking for. One app can do a lot, but not everything. One of the things I really like about Flash is it is like Illustrator, just easier to use. Granted Illustrator is a more professional approach to vector based graphics, flash is great for a quick answer. But that is just my opinion.

hey "simplistik" i get the idea now lol and buy the way i checkout your portfolio, the logos their are great, top shit mate, though are they down in illustrator or photoshop, oh and if so did u do through just options in the app or did u draw then manually with a pen pad?? out of curiosity.
