I've read your post about your knowledge in photoshop and the lack of it on vector programs. you can't save a photoshop image into a vector file. they are two different file formats. you can google their difference..

It's easy... Just save the file in .ai or .eps format By using (File>Save as>....) save option.

You can choose the native Illustrator format (.AI), or .EPS, which is a generic, software independent format.

Other formats you might look into are SVG. which is an open source vector format that web browsers can display (all newer ones anyways).

Also .PDF files retain vectors in their editable state, and this is a preferred format when sending vectors to a printer.

Keep in mind that when saving vector files, if they contain text, it ought to be converted to paths before saving, so that others who don't have the same fonts installed on their system can see the art as intended.

An AI file is a vector file. But an EPS file also have vector cababilities. Vector just means it is scalable and made up of bezier points and paths so it can be resized without losing image quality.
