why JPEG,JPG is lossy?

can anyone explain why JPEG is lossy? while its file size is not that small :confused:
and PNG-24 remain in good quality even i uploaded the photo on web

The difference is how JPG and PNG are compressed. PNG is lossless so the quality is usually better. Is that what you are asking?

JPEGs lose quality because when it is compressed, it removes pixel information. Less information = smaller file size.
PNGs are compressed differently. It creates a smaller file size but it doesn't remove pixel information, so the quality is usually better
