How long, in general, before a a contest goes up for voting?

I doubt I have a chance of winning, as all of the designs are pretty much identical,  but just  curious how long it takes for something sitting there doing nothing before it goes up  for voting.

Also,  on non-guaranteed contests, what happens with  them? Do  they  just  sit there in your "My  Contests" section forever if no  winner is chosen?
