Design contests can be a bit of a gamble for new freelancers. On the plus side, they offer a quick way to build your portfolio and gain experience working with different briefs, and if you win, you get paid. However, the downsides are significant: there's a low chance of winning, meaning a lot of unpaid work, and the prize money is often quite low, contributing to a "race to the bottom" for design fees. While they can provide some initial exposure, it's generally more sustainable to focus on direct client work for better pay and more collaborative relationships in the long run.
