IMHO i think the problem is not in illustrator, because brushes in illustrator is different from photoshop

photoshop treat brushes like watercolor / oli painting brushes
illustrator treat bruses like pencil / ink brushes

that's why there's no use of pressure in illustrator

my works at :bnrdesign and istockphoto

thanks, yes sometimes the shading is tricky

here's my 2nd tutorial, using transparency, gradient and pathfinder
still haven't had any time to write step by step how to's

i hope you still understand just by looking at it
