    Nike logo

I love looking at the history of logos, the evolution of them, specifically corporations with meager beginnings that are now huge companies with iconic logos...

Here's a short informational essay about the Nike swoosh logo... Did anyone else know that the designer that created the swoosh only made $35 for her design! Fascinating. (though I wish the article was a little more interesting...)

I did hear that on TV before. Imagine what they would charge today if they were going to have a firm redesign it! Its arguably one of the most recognizable icons in the world and it only cost them pocket change. Great deal!

    Wink Nike Logo

I've heard that she was paid $35 for the logo but they took care of her later!

Interesting article jjy I have seen a few others like that one that show the transition of corporate logo's.. Sometimes the better logo becomes worse (Lendingtree)... I still think IBM is next on the list for a new logo... I think it needs some curves.. sort of what apple is doing.

they did take care of her, amount never disclosed tho. Easily one of the most powerful logos ever. #1 in sports. I think the three stripes is #3, ESPN #2
    logo guidelines tho... the worst

double edged sword sometimes. a lot of designers that work in companies design a lot of things from logos to packages because thats what they are paid to do. they generally don't have royalty contracts above and beyond their salary. so if something they designed gets acclaimed through awards or internationally branding - they may get a raise but they don't get a bonus or piece of that perceived pie (and they would probably want a piece of the usage rights over a salary boost)...a lot of times it can even fall into intellectual property and if it becomes something long after the designer has left a group/company/agency - the designer REALLY gets nothing.

Seeing jjyepez's post with logo history reminded me about xerox.
The new logo seems to me a very bad idea.

The ball with the x looks like an amateur made it.
First time i saw the logo on the paper products in the supermarkets i thought it was some cheaper version of XEROX or some kind of "china" copy.

    so.. it wasn't a check symbol ?

Also, to me it represents conceptually talking, a check symbol which says "Hey! this is the option to you" ...haha really I never saw it as a wing of a greek god, but good to know that!

I think, always the best logo is simplest one. Best logos i ever see are "Nike" and "Debian".

I agree the simplest designs are better then complicated ones because they can last over a longer period of time.

Not a design topic per se but more about the evolution of a creative campaign... one point about Nike that I found interesting was that their slogan "Just Do It" was um... "inspired" by a man (Gary Gilmore) who said "Let's do it" right before being executed by firing squad.

Learned this watching the movie "Art and Copy" last week. (Pretty cool flick by the way.)
