Ohhh dear... tips and tricks...
So far, I can give you advice for Step 1. - watch (everything around you), practise and learn.
I hope some other much much much better, skilfull and experienced designers would tell you more.
You will probably have troubles, but don't give up. Once you start it, you will become an adict to it.
Couple months ago, I didn't know how to run Ai.
By the way... you will find a lot of useful hints, directions and advices here on the forum - I recommand you to search the threads.
