click on your window tab. select pathfinder.
It'll give you a pop up box somewhere. under Shapes modes: you'll see two boxes that are shaded and where they over lap it'll be white. click on that box (it's called: exclude overlaping shape areas) Then click on expand.

This section of the site is for tutorials, tips, tricks and troubleshooting techniques for all versions of the software, from the Creative Suite right down to earlier versions.
Adobe Illustrator has one of the steepest learning curves of all the graphics applications. Its use of vectors is often one of the most confusing features for many new designers, as is the integration with bitmap editors such as Photoshop and the various page layout programs.
As ever, the teach yourself approach has many advantages over wading through the manual or sitting in a classroom, and online help is a useful way to get to grips with many of the common tools, as well as undocumented features.
Along with the other graphics programs, Adobe Illustrator is being increasingly used in web design as well as its traditional base of graphic design for print. We will regularly be adding more tutorials and tips to this section, so please keep checking back to keep up to date with developments.
